Community participation means different things to different people. It might be joining a local group, visiting the library, volunteering, learning a new skill, attending an appointment or simply becoming more comfortable in familiar community spaces.

Begin with what matters to you

The strongest starting point is an activity connected to your interests. If you enjoy music, sport, gardening, animals, art or technology, these interests can become natural pathways to meeting people and building routines.

Goals do not need to be large. Travelling one stop on public transport, ordering at a café or attending a short group session can be meaningful progress.

Support should build confidence

A support worker can assist with planning, transport, communication, personal care or managing unfamiliar environments. Over time, the level of assistance can change as confidence grows. The purpose is not to take over; it is to make participation safer and more achievable.

Review what is working

After an activity, consider what felt enjoyable, tiring or uncomfortable. Small adjustments—such as changing the time, choosing a quieter venue or preparing a visual schedule—can make the next experience better.

Across Brisbane and surrounding Queensland communities, Continuity Care works with participants to create practical activities that reflect individual goals, preferences and pace.
