Supported Independent Living, often called SIL, involves help or supervision with daily tasks for eligible NDIS participants living in a shared or individual home. Finding the right arrangement is about much more than an available room.

Think about everyday compatibility

Consider your preferred routine, noise levels, food, visitors, pets, social time and need for privacy. If a home is shared, ask how housemates are matched and how everyone is supported to make decisions about their home.

Understand the support model

Ask when workers are present, whether overnight support is active or sleepover, and how unplanned needs are handled. Discuss medication assistance, personal care, meal preparation, transport and any higher-intensity supports relevant to you.

Visit and ask practical questions

Check accessibility, bedroom privacy, shared spaces, transport links and distance from family, work or regular activities. Ask who is responsible for rent, utilities, groceries, household items and maintenance. SIL support funding is generally separate from ordinary living costs, so clear written information matters.

Take your time

You should have an opportunity to visit, meet relevant people and understand the service agreement before deciding. Continuity Care can discuss supported living options and help participants and families identify the questions that matter most.

Availability, eligibility and funding depend on individual circumstances and NDIS decisions.
