Choosing a disability support provider is a personal decision. Qualifications and availability matter, but so do trust, communication and whether the team understands how you want to live your life.

Start with your priorities

Write down the support you need, the outcomes you want and the times that matter most. Consider whether you prefer consistent workers, specific communication methods, cultural understanding, particular experience or support in certain locations.

Questions worth asking

  • How will I be involved in choosing my support workers?
  • What happens if my regular worker is unavailable?
  • How do you manage feedback, incidents and complaints?
  • How are service costs, travel and cancellations explained?
  • How will you protect my privacy and personal information?

Ask for a written service agreement in plain language. Take time to understand the schedule of supports, prices, cancellation terms and process for changing or ending services.

Look for respectful practice

A suitable provider should listen without making assumptions, respect your decisions and explain information clearly. They should be open about worker screening, training and safeguards. You should feel comfortable raising concerns without worrying that your services will be affected.
