Caring for someone can be meaningful and demanding at the same time. When responsibility continues without enough rest or support, stress can build gradually.
Notice the early signs
Common signs of strain can include persistent tiredness, irritability, difficulty concentrating, disrupted sleep, withdrawing from others or feeling that there is never time to recover. These experiences deserve attention rather than judgement.
Make support specific
General offers of help can be hard to accept. Identify practical tasks another person could take on, such as transport, a meal, an appointment, household errands or a regular check-in.
Protect small routines
Rest does not always require a full day away. A predictable hour for exercise, a conversation with a friend or uninterrupted sleep can make a difference. Where appropriate and funded, formal supports may help create sustainable breaks.
Seek help early
A GP can discuss physical or mental health concerns and connect carers with relevant services. Carer organisations and peer groups may also provide information and connection.
Continuity Care works respectfully with families and informal supporters while keeping the participant’s choices at the centre. If distress feels overwhelming or there is immediate risk, contact an appropriate crisis or emergency service.
